Labor Day lands on Monday 7 September this year. For most Florida sites that means a three-day weekend, and for anyone who needs material moving either side of it, the next day or two is when the decisions get made.

The holiday itself is rarely the problem. The squeeze comes on either side of it.

What actually gets tight

Quarries, pits, and scale houses often run reduced hours around a federal holiday, and some close outright. Hours vary by supplier and by location, so the only reliable answer is to ask the specific pit you are drawing from rather than assume last year's schedule still holds.

The second squeeze is tomorrow, the Friday before, and the Tuesday after. Everyone who did not plan ahead tries to move their material into those two days, which means longer queues at the scale and less flexibility if something goes wrong.

A sensible order of operations

If you need material on site before the weekend:

  • Book today. Friday fills up first, and a load booked this morning for tomorrow still has somewhere to go if the pit runs short.
  • Confirm your source is open. Ask about holiday hours when you book, not the morning of.
  • Think about what happens if it slips. If the material has to be placed and compacted before the crew leaves, a Friday afternoon delivery leaves no room at all.

If you need material the week after, Tuesday the 8th is the busiest day of that week. Wednesday is usually calmer.

Staging over the weekend

For sites that can take material early, staging before the holiday is often the cheaper answer — the truck runs on a normal day, the material is on site, and the crew starts Tuesday morning with something to work with rather than waiting on a delivery.

That only works if the site can hold it safely. Stockpiles need somewhere sensible to sit, away from the drainage and away from anywhere the public can get to over a long weekend when nobody is on site.
