Sizing Matters
Rip rap is not a one-size-fits-all material. The correct stone size depends on the expected wave energy, water velocity, slope angle, and project specifications. Smaller rip rap, sometimes called rubble or gabion stone, works for low-energy applications like retention pond edges. Larger, heavier stones are required for seawalls, coastal protection, and high-velocity channels. Using undersized rip rap is one of the most common mistakes in erosion control. If the stones are too small for the wave energy they need to resist, they will simply wash away, taking your investment with them. Always follow the project engineer’s sizing specifications.
Florida Regulatory Considerations
Any work involving waterways, coastal areas, or wetlands in Florida typically requires permitting from one or more agencies, including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, local water management districts, and potentially the Army Corps of Engineers. Material specifications, placement methods, and environmental protections are all part of the permitting process. Your aggregate supplier should be familiar with the types of materials that meet regulatory specifications for erosion control in Florida. Not all stone is suitable. The material needs to be durable, properly sized, and free of contaminants.
