When we’re not hauling aggregates for clients, our Florida trucking company team likes to give back to great causes and the community whenever we can. In the post below, we’d like to highlight one of those causes and share some of the fun we recently had with them!
“While We Have Time, Let Us Do Good.”
That’s the motto of the Tunnel to Towers foundation (T2T), which recently hosted one of their 5k races here in Tampa, FL.
It’s certainly a lot faster to get in a truck and drive the same three miles more than a dozen of our team members ran. But the cause behind this charity always makes every stride, drop of sweat, and racing heart worth it.
Specifically, for the T2T foundation, “doing good” means supporting the heroes of our country.
That means those who have fallen or been significantly injured in regard to being:
● First responders (law enforcement, paramedics, firefighters, etc.)
● Military heroes
● And the families of those individuals
Why The Foundation Was Created
The unofficial, full name for the foundation is the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
In September of 2001, on a date millions of Americans know well, Stephen was one of the first responders who got word over his scanner that the North Tower of the World Trade Center had been struck by a plane.
As those closest to him recall it:
“Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.”
Stephen planned to play golf with his brothers before getting that call, but unfortunately, ended up sacrificing his life while trying to fulfill his duty.
A Silver Lining: Thousands Of Lives Changed
This wasn’t our first rodeo.
We’ve been honored to participate in these charity events for the last several years, even helping to raise over $20,000 for the foundation through individual efforts via GoFundMe and other campaigns.
And for good reason, too:
Thousands of lives have been impacted by the work Tunnel to Towers does.
To date, a total of more than $250 million dollars has been raised! And that $250,000,000 has:
- Helped create the foundation’s Never Forget Mobile Exhibit – a high-tech, 1,100 ft. exhibit hauled by truck around the country that’s used to educate folks about the events and heroes of September 11th.
- Helped host more than 70 events across the country
- Supply 450 mortgage-free homes to heroes and their families in need, and more.
Other Fun Events We Like To Support
Though we service the entire state of Florida, our trucking company naturally has a soft spot for the local communities around us.
After all, we’ve lived here for three generations and counting.
That’s why we regularly also like to give back to various local food banks.
We also sponsor several local sports teams, too.
How You Can Support The Tunnel to Towers Foundation
If you’d like to contribute to the efforts mentioned above, there are a number of ways to get involved on the foundation’s website.
Beyond a donation, there are a number of other options such as:
- Directing a run or climb event
- Participating in one as our team does
- Hosting fundraisers, or simply volunteering at said events.
