How to Save Time and Money With Just-In-Time Delivery

When it comes to ordering base material it can feel like an art more than a science. Unfortunately, a bad estimate can mean a fortune in unwanted material. A recent study suggested up to 30% of ordered construction material ends up in waste. That’s not only bad for your pocket, but it’s also bad for Mother Earth.

The problem with traditional bulk ordering is that the purported benefits of savings are only realized at purchase, assuming you got it right the first time. Statistics tell us, no matter how good you think your science is, you probably won’t.

Enter Just-In-Time Delivery

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Instead of delivering your aggregate all at once, materials are delivered when you’re ready for them. If you’ve got a big job, JIT allows you to save substantial effort on on-the-job aggregate transportation because the amount you need is dropped off just where you need it.

Wait a minute… don’t I save more with bulk ordering?

Absolutely! You do save more with bulk ordering. You’ll still order the same amount, getting the best value for your order by locking in your rate. The best part? If you over order, your material isn’t sitting at a site it’s sitting in the yard, which means you don’t pay for it.

Wait a minute… aren’t those multiple deliveries to the job site expensive?

At T.Disney, we’ll only deliver a full truckload. So whether you need 10 truck loads today, or one truckload a week for the next 10 weeks, your cost remains the same.

Wait a minute… won’t I be wasting time waiting for my materials?

Materials are taking longer than usual to procure, and waiting can lead to a risk of delay. That’s why it’s all about how you’re sourcing. We do the sourcing and the delivery. We know great sourcing is all about timing. We work with our customers and suppliers to schedule drops.

What you’ll need to do JIT right

There’s a catch. JIT isn’t for everyone. The last thing you want is to get at a job site and be bottlenecked because you don’t have the aggregate you need.

Here are some things you need to have handled before looking at JIT:

  • Close monitoring of supply chain. You’ll need to be keeping a pulse on the supply chain, and the specific issues facing the type of material you need. Is there a limited supply? Will it be available when you need it? Or is it safer to deliver all at once now?
  • Very close collaboration with your provider. If you’re sourcing from a provider, you need to know what they have, how much they have, and their current price. You’ll also need to consider how you’re going to have to find the right trucker who is available for delivery.
  • Fast and reliable delivery. You’ll need to be able to count on your delivery to be there when you need.

At T. Disney Trucking, we’ve built deep roots in Florida. We source and truck to help our customers procure what they need when they need it so you don’t have to worry about juggling multiple contacts and schedules. At the end of it all, you get one invoice for your job.
